Pack the crew and set out on a family vacation across Borneo's gorgeous jungles. On a picturesque boat along the Kinabatangan River, keep an eye out for cheeky monkeys, or let the monkeys come to you at one of Borneo's famous animal sanctuaries. Visit a Dusun village and meander through enormous tea plantations in Ranau to learn about a bygone period. Stop at picturesque Dinawan Island to witness the colourful fish that live beneath its glistening waters. This island is packed with amazing memories everywhere you look. This tour covers a lot of ground, so plan on some long drives of up to 5 hours. To break up the journey, you'll stop in intriguing places wherever feasible. The lodging options range from hotels to unique chalets to jungle lodges. The latter two may be more basic than our typical hotels. Their distinct position and proximity to animals are what distinguishes them. We visit Kinabalu National Park but do not climb the summit on this trip. Travelling light is necessary because the internal aircraft has a stringent 15 kilogramme luggage limit. Excess luggage will incur additional charges.
Thank you for visiting! Hello and welcome to Malaysia. Your experience begins at 5 p.m. with a Welcome Meeting. If you come early enough, you may learn about the history of this fascinating city nestled between the Borneo jungle and the South China Sea at the Sabah State Museum. You can also go to the Mari Mari Cultural Village or explore the islands off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, which are great for swimming and snorkelling.

Leaving Kota Kinabalu behind, go for the hills and unspoiled wildness of Kinabalu National Park, which is recognised as a World Heritage Site. Stop en route at a Dusun village to visit a native residence. The Dusun people are extremely friendly, and you'll have the opportunity to learn about their culture while sampling local foods over a home-cooked meal. If you're lucky, you might be able to try linopot, a delightful snack made of rice neatly wrapped inside a leaf. Join a guided half-day village tour that includes a visit to a local bee farm and a look at how coffee is made at a local factory. You'll also meet the ladies of Everything Pineapple, a company famed for its delectable pineapple goods. This NGO helps local women achieve new levels of social and financial success while also producing some of the greatest jam you'll ever taste. Later, take a leg-stretching stroll through Mount Kinabalu Botanical Garden to take in the beautiful views. Travel by private bus to Sabah Tea Plantation late in the day. You will spend the night in the midst of a lovely tea garden.

Arrive at your rainforest lodge, which is situated along a river and is great for taking in the natural surroundings. The Kinabatangan River is a protected forest reserve with some of Borneo's highest densities of species. In the afternoon, take a river boat in the hopes of seeing some of the more unique local wildlife. Crocodiles, macaques, wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and kingfishers are more visible than wild elephants. Return to the lodge for dinner after this brief adventure. We go for a night walk after dinner.

The vibrant harbour-side market, several Chinese temples, and local food all have a Cantonese flavour. This afternoon, you will have opportunity to visit the Sandakan War Memorial (optional - additional fee for transportation). The memorial was formerly a Japanese POW camp, and it also symbolises the beginning of the dreadful Sandakan Death Marches, in which 2,400 POWs were forced to travel through Borneo's rainforests. Only six of these people survived due to daring escapes.

GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
All two-person family groups will be assigned to a twin room. Families of three will be accommodated in a triple room whenever possible. Please be aware that triple rooms are in scarce supply in a few locations. In practise, this means that a triple room is typically just a twin room with a mattress on the floor or a third bed crammed in. If a triple room is not available, you must choose which member of your group will take the single room. Families of four or more will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. If and when possible, we will try to place you in a quadruple room. While we will try our best to ensure that families are roomed near together (in some situations, neighbouring rooms can be arranged), we cannot promise this. Most family vacations take place during peak season, and we have little to no control over where you will be placed. You must arrive prepared for this. Tented Villa (two nights), Guesthouse (one night), Resort (two nights), and Hotel (four nights).
Every Intrepid Family tour is led by one of our group leaders. The group leader's goal is to help your family take the burden out of your travels and enjoy the greatest trip possible. Your guide will provide information on the areas you are visiting, make ideas for interesting things to do and see for both kids and parents, propose great local eating establishments that will even get the kids trying new things, and introduce you to our local friends. While not traditional tour guides, you can expect them to have a broad general understanding of the nations visited on the journey, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects.
On this trip, our leaders will not be babysitters; we will leave that to you (the professionals), but they will ensure that group members of all ages may explore their destination securely and with as much fun as possible. Our tour guides are not responsible for minors at any time, and children must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times during this trip.
